Abstract:
The treatment of thyroid nodules using surgical techniques has seen continuous technological innovation in recent decades, which has significantly contributed to the increase in scientific output in this field. Objective: To provide a bibliometric description of scientific output in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, comparing data from the multidisciplinary databases Web of Science and Scopus. Methodology: Bibliographic searches on thyroid surgery and parathyroid surgery in Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection (WoS), identifying all published documents on both subjects and extracting variables such as year, source publication, document type, subject categories, language, geographic and institutional origin, and funding agency. Results: A higher number of citations was identified in Scopus than in Web of Science for both types of surgery: 61,846 for thyroid surgery compared to 27,742, and 16,885 for parathyroid surgery compared to 10,918. In thyroid surgery, an initial increase occurred in the 1960s, which became exponential starting in 1990, while in parathyroid surgery, the increase has been more consistent over the decades. The articles were primarily published in English-language journals in the fields of endocrinology and surgery, authored by researchers from the United States or China affiliated with academic and research institutions. Conclusions: Search strategies are the most effective tools for identifying scientific literature on a given subject, although achieving complete comprehensiveness is difficult due to differences in indexing policies and source selection. In any case, it appears that Scopus offers a more comprehensive “snapshot” than WoS. As is the case with the vast majority of biomedical topics and disciplines, scientific output in thyroid and parathyroid surgery has increased exponentially throughout the 20th century and continues to do so in the 21st century. Although there is a wide variety of publication options, researchers predominantly choose the most relevant journals in their specialties, published in English. Likewise, the dominance of certain countries and leading institutions reflects their global leadership in the biomedical field, making it clear that it is educational and research institutions that are at the forefront of biomedicine.
